There was a strong presence of ISPEPers at the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) European meeting, which took place in London last month. Trishna Bharadia was among the faculty and has kindly provided an overview of how patient engagement was embedded into the event.
Patient engagement in publications is an evolving space that has seen rapid development over the last few years. This was reflected in recent ISMPP European and Annual Meetings, with the 2025 European Meeting having the largest patient presence to date.
Patient involvement in the meeting was built on strong foundations, with patient advocate presence on the Programme Committee (Trishna Bharadia, Adeline Rosenberg), as well as through Meeting Chair Mithi Ahmed. Patients were supported by a sponsorship programme, which provided financial assistance for their attendance (something ISPEP is a strong supporter of!). Finally, a “Patient Partner Connect” session was organised for patients/patient advocates attending the meeting, to meet their peers and hear from experienced ISMPP members on what to expect from the event.
"Patients were supported by a sponsorship programme, which provided financial assistance for their attendance."
Meeting content included multiple patient-related sessions and roundtables, such as:
“Empowering Patient Voices in Authorship: Navigating Barriers and Enhancing Support”
"The People’s PubMed: Empowering Patients in the Age of Misinformation"
A ‘hackathon’ workshop on ‘Good Publication Practice’ with a dedicated theme of “Enhanced Patient Involvement”

There was also strong patient authorship and patient-related topics among the research posters, with use of the “patient/caregiver author” affiliation making it easier to identify where patients/caregivers had been involved. Topics included human vs. AI-generated plain language summaries, patient involvement in European medical congresses, and use of the GRIPP2 checklist for reporting patient and public involvement in research.
The importance of patient involvement was repeatedly cited by delegates as a theme that had emerged strongly from the meeting and it has been great to see ISMPP working to fully integrate and support the patient voice.
