From mission statements to conference slogans, everyone claims patients are “at the centre” of research and care. Yet for many patients and advocates, these promises ring hollow. Promises of partnership often turn into perfunctory gestures, leaving patients feeling unheard and disillusioned. 


This article critically examines the engagement gap – the gulf between intentions and implementation – and offers strategies to better align patient engagement rhetoric with real-world practice across healthcare systems, policy, and industry.
